What hypnosis is and why it works

Background

o In 1955 the British Medical Association approved the use of hypnosis for anesthesia.
o In 1958 the American Medical Association approved hypnosis for medical uses and recommended instruction in hypnosis in medical schools.
o In 1960 the American Psychological Association endorsed hypnosis as a branch of psychology.

Conscious and Subconscious Mind

Everyone has a conscious and subconscious mind. The conscious mind is logical and rational. It has short-term memory and can remember 7 plus or minus 2 items at once. The conscious mind has our will power.

The subconscious mind has all our emotions, creativity and long-term memory. It remembers everything from our past, even things we have difficulty consciously recalling. The subconscious mind holds our habits and protects us. The subconscious runs our bodies. It keeps our hearts beating, it digests our food, it keeps us breathing.

Awake or asleep, our subconscious mind is always doing a great deal of important work. We may consciously decide to pick up a glass, but our subconscious mind does the work of reaching, grasping and lifting it.

Creating Habits

Using will power to change a habit is frequently unsuccessful because once the habit is formed, conscious will power has remarkably little power to change it.

Take the example of riding a bike. When learning to ride you consciously have to learn how to balance, steer, pedal, brake, look where you are going, and stop. It is tough and usually involves a fall or two.

The subconscious mind, drawing on its protective nature, adopts these activities as habits and remembers them forever. You never forget how to ride a bike because your subconscious mind protects you. That way you will never forget how to swim in the middle of a lake or forget how to drive while in the passing lane.

Changing Habits

You can not use conscious will power to unlearn how to ride a bike and, likewise, will power alone can make for a difficult time in losing weight. It can literally lead to an internal struggle to eat or lose weight.

Since the subconscious mind is much more powerful than the conscious mind, frequently will power alone is unpleasant at best and unsuccessful at worst. If someone consciously thinks about the food that is not to be eaten, first they get really hungry, and sooner or later give in and eat it. Then they feel bad. Then they try and fail again and feel worse. The end result can be a self esteem nose-dive.

Hypnosis enables us to communicate directly with the subconscious and work directly with habits. By changing a habit, we eliminate the struggle. That is why losing weight with hypnosis is easier, and why our clients walk out of a session happily knowing that they are on track to reach their weight management goals.
